# How to use keyboard shortcuts

> Work faster in Nobly Insight with keyboard shortcuts, and change, turn off or reset them to suit how you work.

## Overview

Keyboard shortcuts let you search, move through results, save and open things without reaching for the mouse. Everything you can do with a shortcut you can also do with a normal Tab, Enter and Space, so shortcuts are a faster path, never the only one.

To see every shortcut with the keys you currently use, press <kbd>?</kbd> anywhere in Nobly Insight, or open your user menu and choose **Keyboard shortcuts**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> On macOS, use <kbd>⌘ Cmd</kbd> wherever this page says <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>, and <kbd>⌥ Option</kbd> for <kbd>Alt</kbd>.

## Shortcuts

### Everywhere

| Action | Keys |
| - | - |
| Open the command palette | <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>K</kbd> |
| Show keyboard shortcuts | <kbd>?</kbd> |
| Show or hide the sidebar | <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>B</kbd> |
| Close a dialog or menu | <kbd>Esc</kbd> |

The command palette lets you jump to any page, open a saved search, or open a document by typing its ID. On the Caseflow page it also lists your applications, recently opened items and Caseflow searches.

### Search and Caseflow pages

| Action | Keys |
| - | - |
| Go to the search field | <kbd>/</kbd> |
| Next result | <kbd>Alt</kbd> + <kbd>↓</kbd> |
| Previous result | <kbd>Alt</kbd> + <kbd>↑</kbd> |

On the Caseflow page, <kbd>/</kbd> opens the command palette, which is where you search on that page. Next and previous result move the preview through the result list without taking you away from where you are, for example while you edit keywords.

### Result list

Press <kbd>Tab</kbd> until a row in the result list has focus. Then:

| Action | Keys |
| - | - |
| Move to the next or previous row | <kbd>↓</kbd> / <kbd>↑</kbd> |
| Move to the first or last row | <kbd>Home</kbd> / <kbd>End</kbd> |
| Open the row | <kbd>Enter</kbd> |
| Select or deselect the row | <kbd>Space</kbd> |
| Extend the selection | <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>↓</kbd> / <kbd>↑</kbd> |
| Select all rows | <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>A</kbd> |

Selecting rows works while the result list shows its selection checkboxes. Moving between rows also updates the preview.

### Keywords and Caseflow forms

| Action | Keys |
| - | - |
| Save changes | <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>S</kbd> |

You can save while you are still typing in a field. When there is nothing to save, <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>S</kbd> does what your browser normally does.

### Caseflow

| Action | Keys |
| - | - |
| Go to an object by ID | <kbd>#</kbd> |

### Redaction

| Action | Keys |
| - | - |
| Undo | <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>Z</kbd> |
| Redo | <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>Z</kbd> |

### Text fields

| Action | Keys |
| - | - |
| Send a note or confirm a comment | <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>Enter</kbd> |

## When shortcuts don't run

So that typing is never interrupted, shortcuts don't run while you type in a text field, except opening the command palette, saving and sending. While a dialog is open, only its own shortcuts run, so nothing changes on the page behind it. Close the dialog first to open the command palette.

## Change your shortcuts

You can give any action different keys, turn a shortcut off, or go back to the defaults. Your changes are saved to your account, so they follow you to every browser you sign in on.

1. Open your user menu and choose **Personal settings**.
2. Under **General**, choose **Keyboard shortcuts**.
3. Next to an action, choose:
   * **Change**, then press the new keys. Press <kbd>Esc</kbd> to cancel.
   * **Turn off** to stop the shortcut from running. Choose **Turn on** to bring it back.
   * **Reset** to go back to the default keys.
4. Choose **Save changes**.

To undo all your changes at once, choose **Reset all to defaults**, then **Save changes**.

Some keys can't be used:

* Keys another action already uses. Nobly Insight tells you which action has them.
* For actions that also work while you type (the command palette, saving and sending), keys without <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> (<kbd>⌘ Cmd</kbd> on macOS), since they would type text instead.
* Keys your browser, your operating system or screen readers rely on, such as <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>W</kbd>, <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>T</kbd> or <kbd>Tab</kbd>.

> [!TIP]
>
> If you use a screen reader or speech input and a single-key shortcut such as <kbd>?</kbd> or <kbd>#</kbd> gets in the way, turn it off or change it to a combination with <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> or <kbd>Alt</kbd>.

The keys in the result list and <kbd>Esc</kbd> can't be changed. They follow the standard keyboard behaviour of lists and dialogs.
